647 - Corbett Redford

Every movement has somewhere sacred renowned as its birthplace and for East Bay Punk, that is undeniably 924 Gilman. For years this club has been the epicenter of a community formed by outsiders, freethinkers, and cultural revolutionaries armed with nothing more than determination and a few power chords. Corbett Redford spent the last four years of his life pouring over footage chronicling Green Day, Rancid, NOFX, and countless others to create his documentary, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk. Who better could properly encapsulate all these vastly unique personalities sharing one common thread than someone who lived through all that triumph and turmoil themselves? Corbett applied what he learned from a fiercely independent scene to plunge headfirst into crafting a story that uplifts the powerfully honest principles behind punk rock and highlights how voices both big and small play a crucial role in shaping communities that matter. This interview weaves between Corbett's own involvement in the scene, how he came to make this beautiful film about it, and what is next on the horizon for him. Talking Points "You're cool... but fuck your band" and three friendly guidelines from Billie Joe. A handbook for building a community with music as a backdrop.  Remembering what you learned about what you are capable of building.  Finding connections with the human element when you need it.  A culture shift towards celebrating the outsiders.  Eggplants in every scene and how artists see art.  Is inclusivity the answer? Learning to meet people in the middle.  Not every band can be Fugazi and products of bad geography.  Sitting face to face with real racism, putting out a helping hand, and getting someone on the path.  The DIY mentality on being who you want to be.  Silent contributors to Gilman and never forgetting where you come from.  Circle Of Trust Talking Points Slipping into the next thing through music.  Life always finds a way.  Did everyone have their coffee today? Where is the next place to go? Collaborating with Iggy Pop and working with your heroes to get the real story.  Who was Corbett in this film? Finding your next steps and learning new reflexes. Can you go back to normal life?  Recalibration, responsibility, and the real creative crescendo.  Exhaustion, art, and emotional lottery tickets. Keeping the stoke.  TEAM TURN IT AROUND…read more
